Hum Naujawan is the story of Prof. Hans (Dev Anand), a renowned poet who is forced by a chain of personal and circumstantial events to take over the reigns of a trouble-torn college - which in the past has thrown up great talent in different walks of life - of which he too has been one. The trouble-shooter is the gun-happy, knife-splashing Shammi (Atlee Brar) and his henchmen. Shammi is the son of the State Home Minister, Desai (Shreeram Lagoo). The college also has a multitude of good students, including Rashmi (Richa Sharma) and Sanjay (Bunty Behl) who find themselves helpless against the combined strength of Shammi and his gang.
Rashmi is infatuated by the works and personality of Prof. Hans, and fantasises about him. Sanjay has been an unwilling, helpless accomplice of Shammi in a dastardly act. So he becomes a prey. Also wanting to fight the misuse of power and disruptive forces is an honest cop, Police Commissioner Khan (Anupam Kher) - a cog in the wheel, limited in the discharge of his duties by the constraints of the uniform. Also round the bend is Prof. Han's missing daughter, Priya (Tabbu).
Hum Naujawan is a gripping tale about campus violence. The story of a principled Principal, of an institution with a glorious past but a torrorised present. The story of one man's courage and determination to challenge the established order of things - a gruesome fight against terrorism, corruption and misuse of power.
Hum Naujawan is all about how Prof. Hans fights the system overcomes personal and professional tragedies, brings Sanjay and Rashmi together, finds out the truth as usual a contemporary film by a contemporary man. Torn out of newspaper headlines.
